Charlotte—or Cha-Cha as her parents call her—was born on February 15, 2002. She is the daughter of Angelica and Paul and the sister of Madeline. She suffers from an undiagnosed condition called Progressive Neural-Muscular Disease, that resembles Tay-Sachs disease. “She is so soft and sweet,” says her mother Angelica. “She takes your breath away. You can kiss her 3,000 times an hour and she’d not get tired of it. You connect with her almost in a spiritual place, because she’s not verbal. What’s happened through Charlotte’s life, to me, is I’m amazed at the goodness of people. I expect good now instead of bad.” Regarding Charlotte’s uncertain prognosis, her mother adds: “When I pray, I always ask for the best for her…which is hard, because it means she might have to leave.”
