in honor of Arlene

Born on July 7, 2013, Arlene passed away when she was just ten months old. She suffered from hypoplastic left heart syndrome.  “I love that despite the pain she may have been going through, she always had the biggest smile,” her mother says. “Happiness would just shine right out of her.” She had a way of lifting her mother’s spirits, particularly at the most trying times: “She was getting ready to go back for her first open-heart surgery at two days old, and 15 minutes before they took her she opened her eyes, looked at me directly in the eyes, and smiled. I felt at ease, for it was as if she was confirming that she would be just fine.”

Arlene’s mom would like to thank Seattle Children’s, “particularly Dr. Chang, Mark Powers, and all of the caring and loving nurses.”
