Pemberley

Pemberley made a strong impression on her loved ones during her short time with them. She was born on December 23, 2015, and passed away the following January 5. “She survived longer than any of her medical team expected,” her mother says. “She had such strength and such a feisty spirit! Her names come from books—Pemberley from Pride and Prejudice and Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. Both have strong female leads. She very easily lived up to her namesakes. She had a well-known ‘stink face’ with the nurses to let you know she wasn’t happy.”

Pemberley was born at 28 weeks with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and a complex condition in which her heart was on the right, and her stomach and esophagus didn’t connect. “When she first arrived at Children’s, the doctors and surgeons were amazed at her state, given her conditions. To have both together is extremely rare. She had surgery in her first 24 hours after birth, and did remarkably well. She also had one other acute episode in the NICU when she wasn’t expected to survive, yet did. We felt both events proved just how strong and feisty she was.”

Pemberley’s family wants to thank the Seattle Children’s team for its stellar, loving care.
