in honor of Serene

Serene, who was nine months old when this portrait was taken, was born on July 12, 2012. When she was nineteen days old, she was diagnosed with biliary atresia, and when she was eight months old, she received a liver transplant. “After the transplant,” her mother says, we saw how damaged her liver was and we couldn’t believe how happy and smiley she had been. And so strong!”

Serene certainly lived up to her name. “Just shortly after surgery and while in the ICU, she looked at us and smiled.”

Serene’s mom and dad want to thank Seattle Children’s Hospital for its “fantastic care.”
