David Sonsteng

D.J. Sonsteng is a photographer who approaches his work with honesty, respect, and a photojournalist’s eye for detail. He first learned the impact of storytelling through images in high school as part of the school newspaper, and later realized photography had become more than a hobby while working in a studio environment. Over time, his work evolved into a way of documenting the people and moments that matter most to him.

With more than two decades in EMS and fire, D.J. brings a steady, grounded presence to every session. He knows how to read a room, where to stand, and how to stay out of the way while still finding the quiet, meaningful moments that tell a story. His approach is candid and observant, with a focus on capturing the details and authenticity that families often want to hold on to but rarely get to see.

While much of his work centers on first responders and their families, the heart of D.J.’s photography is simple: to honor people and the stories they carry. His images are meant to help families feel seen, understood, and proud of the moments he’s able to preserve.
